Communicating through Graphic Design

Sales tools that our studio created for MasterCard Advisors was featured in the new book “Communicating Through Graphic Design.” Developed for high school students, it’s a comprehensive guide to graphic design, helping them understand the design-rich world around them. The book is published by Davis Publications (www.davisart.com) and written by Kevin Gatta (http://www.gattago.com) (a former colleague of Dan’s at Pushpin Lubalin Peckolick) and Claire Mowbray Golding.

Welcome Aboard Stephanie

Taylor Design has added Stephanie Mullins to its team. A 2009 graduate of the University of Connecticut’s Communication Design program, Steph was chosen to work in the UConn Design Center her junior year. During college, she worked as an intern at the Dornenburg Group in West Hartford and Alexander Isley Inc. in Georgetown. After graduation, she joined Group C in New Haven, working on book design and website development for Pickard Chilton, CAMA, and Saint Thomas More.

Our New Studio Home

After twelve years at 51 Bank Street, Taylor Design has moved its studio a block west to 247 Main Street in Stamford. Our new office is above Market Restaurant and across the street from the city’s Columbus Park. Partnering with Culpen & Woods Architects, we took advantage of the building’s exposed brick walls, structural iron beams, and wood ceiling to create a workspace that is open, efficient, and collaborative. Come visit sometime!

How to Rock a Redesign at CASE Boston

On March 25th, Hannah Fichandler, Senior Art Director at Taylor Design, and Suzanne Gray, Associate Director of Creative Projects at Sarah Lawrence College, will be presenting at the CASE Editors Forum in Boston. They will explore the foundations of a successful redesign process, using the redesign of Sarah Lawrence magazine—the 2009 CASE grand gold winner for periodical design. To be discussed: when and why to redesign; how to evaluate a magazine’s personality, structure and function; how to build a cohesive and flexible design; and how to navigate the politics of creating buy-in and securing approvals on campus. The Editors Forum conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency Cambridge, Boston, MA, from March 24 – 26, 2010. (More Info)

Dan Taylor Guest Speaker at CADC in New Haven

CADC starts off the new year off by exploring the creative process and complexities of business management with the principals of three Connecticut studios: John Visgilio of outthink, Dan Taylor of Taylor Design, and Rich Hollant of co:lab. The speakers will share their approach to producing great work, maintaining creativity and managing their staff with vision through a changing marketplace, and give insight on what it takes to run a successful business. College magazine receives award in Creative Quarterly 17

Sarah Lawrence Magazine, the college’s flagship publication, was selected as a winner in the Creative Quarterly 17 competition. Creative Quarterly is a journal that features the best of art and design, from advertising to architecture, from sculpture to jewelry. The entries will be displayed online at CQjournal.com.

American Graphic Design Awards Competition

Taylor Design received three awards in the 2008 American Graphic Design Awards Competition, presented by Graphic Design USA Magazine. The projects honored include the 2007 annual report for Keep America Beautiful, the Environmental Data Resources (EDR) collateral system, and the 2008 viewbook for Queens College.
